Local tax value of mine is alleged to be closer to $5, and I call total BS on *that*.

It's just nuts. If it hadlike 50,000 kms or something I could see like $8K. This isn't even close.

I am thinking I want an old merc now. Although obviously one a lot more reasonably priced. Have you enjoyed yours? Are they all automatic??

Many questions.

yeah especially for a 87 with the crack-tastic #14 cylinder head on it. Though if that one is original, it is likely cast okay. Hell of alot of money to spend on an unknown though. Clean enough, but I wonder if those ugly non OE upper rub strips are really worth that extra cake

All or nearly all the W124s in this country and Canada are auto to the best of my knowledge, and that trans isn't nearly as bomb-proof as the one in the W-123. If you were willing to go for an old enough W123, there are a few manuals floating around, but they're 240Ds or gas. The 300 five-cylinder in non-turbo version did exist in a stick, but not on these shores, and getting the conversion parts is a pain.

My '87 W124 300D six is best described as a comfortable pair of pants. It's like the car equivalent of a pair of pants that fits perfectly, has the exact right amount of pockets, and just won't wear out - and is a tasteful color, doesn't stain, and is neither too hot nor too cold. There's nothing spectacular about it, really, but it's just generally competent all the way through in a way that is spectacular.

Of course, mine has so many miles that while it's not burning lots of oil or anything, it has very very poor power delivery. "Turbo" is a very poor joke. (319k when the odometer broke, years ago.)

It is like 3-4X what should be asked fo sho. On the plus side, I guess it'll be up for a while.

If the underside is a clean and rust-free as the rest appears to be, I'd give you 3 grand. And then, only if you have the service records and that transmission has been rebuilt once.

But 14000 dollars?

That's even assuming the trans was rebuilt *right*. Mine was clearly rebuilt by a chucklefuck, as when I got it, the shift points were all set wrong, and it still has a mild gasket leak.
